What I Am Reading About :) (#1)

Well, i am reading Moose. It is a book about a girl named Stephanie Klein who is pregnant with twins. She is two thin, and her Doctor tells her she needs to gain 50lbs. The part i am at is, she is telling the story of when she was little and how she was obese (fat, as she calls it). She goes to Fran who is a "Fat doctor" who helps her try to loose weight. Every day her mom packs her a sandwich (with wheat bread) and a fruit or veggie. She gets called moose, by the boys and popular people hence the name of the book. :) I choose this book because I took it out of the library once and decided not to read it. When we went back to look for books for this project i found it and decided to read it. It turns out, i really like it!

  1. Brit,

It sounds like you are enjoying the book a lot! Even reading and posting at home...I love it.

What I do not love, however, is how the adults in the book make her feel like she should be something other than what she is. How do you think Steph feels about the whole situation (people telling her she has to lose weight and all of that)?

  2. I think that Stephanie doesn't like being called fat, and she doesn't like it when people make her call herself fat. I think she feels like she is trying her hardest to loose weight. But she doesn't realize that when she eats two whole servings for supper, even tho it may be on the healthier side, she doesn't need it. She is only eating because she is board, and it is there, not because she is hungry. I feel bad tho, because when she tried to tell her parents she lost 2 pounds, he told her not to get her hopes up, and that she had a long way to go, that when she started to gain weight.

  4. Hi Brit,
First of all, this is an awesome assignment. You all have fallen for Mrs. Phillips and Mr. LePauloues trap to get you writing without complaining about it.
I think that this is a great book for middle school students to read because it reveals the effects of bullying others and how they feel about it. What some kids may think is harmless fun (fooling around!!)can really have a long lasting effect on the people that they are teasing. I am assuming that this woman is now in her 20's or 30's and she still vividly remembers the words said to her when she was in middle school. Its like those kids still have control over mind and actions.
Anyways, thanks for the opportunity to respond to your blog.
    Mr. Hersey
